The rolling land in Southwest Calgary is gently embellished with hills and valleys, deep ravines, small ponds and fresh water. Post Secondary
Mount Royal College is a degree-granting college with a campus at Mount Royal Gate. Established in 1910, this popular post-secondary school attracts 13,000 students every year.
Transportation and Recreation
The C-Train is Calgary's Light Rail Transit line. It currently serves the area from downtown all the way to Somerset/Bridlewood Station in Somerset, SW Calgary. All communities in SW Calgary also have city bus service and connections to C-Train stations. Over the next 10 years, Calgary Transit plans to extend the LRT system further into the west part of town, going up to 69th Street and possibly even to 85th Street.
Calgary City Trails
For those that prefer to be 100% self-propelled, Calgary has the most extensive urban trail system in North America. Approximately 635 km of pathways and 260 km of bikeways scout the city highways and biways taking walkers, joggers, cyclists and rollerbladers to work, school and play every day, all-year-round. The city has regular snow removal on the best-loved paths to keep residents moving even in the coldest months. Many trails, like those around Glenmore Reservoir, welcome horseback riding as well. Like the rest of Calgary, the Southwest is well-served by this fantastic inner city system.
Recreation
There's plenty of opportunity for those who like to get out and go in Calgary. With so much great open terrain and only a short drive from the most majestic mountains on the continent, horseback riding, golf, hiking, mountain biking, and kayaking are all popular activities here.
For those who prefer the indoors, the city also operates four public recreational facilites in SW Calgary. Local residents can enjoy heated swimming pools, fitness centres, hot tubs, drop-in childcare and a range of fitness classes in the SW through the Calgary Board of Recreation.
Canada Olympic Park, Fish Creek Provincial Park, Edworthy Park, Optimist Athletic Park, Glenmore Athletic Park, and Stanley Park are just a few of the many parks and green belts in the Southwest.
The Westside recreation centre is also in Southwest Calgary. This is a stunning family fitness facility with skating rinks, an aquatic park with a wave pool and water slide. The Westside gym includes a climbing wall, cardio equipment, weight machines and a 430m walking/running track. The centre also offers rec programs for kids and adults, rooms for community events, parties and meetings. There's drop-in childcare for parents using the facility as well as regular daycare, after school and preschool programs. There's also a free outdoor skate park and basketball courts for public use.
