Globalfest is an umbrella festival that consists of two festivals and a night market. This festival held from August 20th to 29th, it's a celebration of the different cultures around the world that make up the population of Calgary. Here is what to expect during this year's Globalfest.
This popular destination for tourists is great for anyone to shop. It has many souvenirs and art vendors, who sell locally made and culturally relevant wares on the streets. Because the market takes place at night, it is a romantic and engaging moonlit experience.
Every pavilion in the park will be dedicated to cultural presentations whether it is a performance, world music, or food, such as Philipino and Indonesian just to name a few. This is a great way to learn about another culture or to teach your children about your own heritage. It will be a unique experience to travel the world without leaving Calgary!
Human Rights Forum
The human rights forum is Globalfest's initiative to promote cross cultural understanding. Each year has a different theme, and this year's theme will consist of topics surrounding gender identity, women's issues, and the role of temporary workers in the Canadian workforce. Admission is free, and it will go from August 12th to 16th at the Calgary Public Library.
Where is this festival?
The festival is held every August at Elliston Park right off 17th Avenue. If the crowds get too much at the festival, there is a lot of walking room with a lot of trees to absorb some nature, as well as a big lake. There are plenty of picnic tables around for when you get some international food from the many vendors at the festival.
Don't forget to order your tickets for this annual festival that has become just as important and significant to culture in Calgary as the people who inspired the festival itself.
