The Ground Hog may have called it right. Spring has come early in Calgary and to prove it, a local golf course opened for business two weeks after the furry critter made his prediction.
Golfers at Fox Hollow in north east Calgary couldn’t believe it themselves when they unloaded their clubs on Feb. 16 for a few rounds on temporary greens and tees.
Fox Hollow is a public course adjacent to Deerfoot Trail on the south side of 32 Ave NE. The course is mostly dry with some hints of snow in low-lying areas. The ground is hard and you have to really push your tees into the ground.
Despite opening a full month ahead of schedule, Fox Hollow Golf Course saw action as enthusiastic duffers arrived en masse to be the first out on the fairway.
This isn’t the earliest the north east course has ever opened. In 2012, Fox Hollow opened the first week of February, also on temporary greens. The only other Alberta course to open this early in 2016 was Paradise Canyon in Lethbridge, and only the driving range is open at the present time.
Could it be other golf courses could follow suit?
