Canadians care deeply about the environment in which they live. And none more so, than Albertans. The province has been a global leader, in the implementation of greenhouse gas reduction for a considerable number of years, and is recognised as an innovator in this field. In fact, since the launch of the province's Climate Change and Emissions Management Amendment Act in 2007, all industrial facilities that produce in excess of 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases per annum, have been required to cut their emissions intensity by 12%. These companies receive a charge of $15 for every tonne of greenhouse gas that is produced, above this target, which is put into a technology fund.

Now the non-profit Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation, has announced that a figure exceeding $37.5 million, raised through this groundbreaking scheme, has been awarded to five renewable energy projects within Alberta. And, even more funding is in the pipeline for further ventures.

One of the proud recipients of this scheme is Calgary's Enmax Corporation, who plan to use the money to install innovative wind and solar power facilities into some 9,000 city and country homes, throughout the province. It is hoped that this ambitious $65 million scheme, will help to reduce greenhouse emissions all across Alberta.

Home owners taking part in the project, will pay for the initial installation of the technology, followed by monthly rental fees. Enmax anticipates that these costs, for the majority of typical domestic customers, will be offset by the savings made on household electricity bills.

Climate Change and Emissions Management Corporation Chair Eric Newell said, "These projects will reach people in Alberta's cities, in our towns and in our rural communities. They demonstrate that Canada has the capacity and the commitment to develop clean technology that will help address North America's climate change challenge."

Also on the receiving end of CCEMC funding are Plasco Alberta Inc., who were awarded $10 million for their plan to build and operate a Waste Conversion and Renewable Energy Facility in Red Deer County, while $3 million went to the City of Medicine Hat for their Solar Thermal Power Project.
