Donor Gives $1 Million to Calgary Charities
Posted by Writing Team on Thursday, December 23rd, 2010 at 4:23pm.Just in time for the holidays, an anonymous donor gave $1 million to six Calgary charities--all of which were named on Charity Intelligence Canada's list of Recommended Charities.
The timing for this gift was impeccable for several of the organizations, including the Potential Place Society, which is a non-profit agency that assists clients with mental illness lead more independent lives. After having had to move due to rent increases, the organization needed to renovate their new home in order to better serve their clientele. These renovations cost more than $100,000.
Without enough money on hand, they faced going into debt to cover the costs. In response to receiving a cheque for more than $160,000, Potential Place's Executive Director is quoted in the Calgary Herald as saying, "Talk about prayers begins answered. It was really a godsend."
Other charities benefiting from the donation include:
- Fresh Start Recovery Centre, which houses nearly 40 men who are struggling with addiction.
- Simon House Recovery Centre, an award-winning addiction treatment facility.
- Momentum Community Economic Development Society, which assists under-employed people with managing their finances, starting their own businesses, and learning new skills.
- Inn from the Cold is an emergency shelter for families. They offer a place to sleep, as well as access to resources in the community.
- Calgary Food Bank provides emergency food hampers to those struggling and homeless.
These organizations work all year long trying to improve the lives of Calgary residents, and it's wonderful that they're enjoying a bit of financial respite this holiday season.
While very few people can afford to make million dollar donations, we can all donate something, whether it be a bit of time, money, or just by spreading the word. After all, anything from an illness to a job loss can place a family in serious financial peril, so it's important for us all to support the agencies that support our neighbours.
To everyone who donates time or money to Calgary's community organizations, thank you.
